  • Come visit

I have been remiss on typing on Xanga. I’ve been busy with this whole deployment thing, so I think I have a good excuse.
There isn’t a lot to say about it though. I work in a palace, but it loses its appeal fast.
I find it amazing that I’m no longer in awe of this place. The al-Faw palace is huge. I bought a handheld “YouTube” camera so I can make videos about the stuff here. Unfortunately, the bandwidth on my internet, a whopping 128 kbs, is not always cooperative to this goal.
I find though that it is best to upload in the morning and go to work while it’s doing its thing. If successful, there should be me rambling on the tubes.
Last time it made it to 99% before encountering an error. There is a short clip on the fish. My Youtube ID is Armywriter28. My eventual goal is to wander the halls of the palace and do small walking tours. I should probably make a storyboard and a plan, but who needs planning?
    Not I.
I finished a prior learning assessment from college. It confirms that I write creatively enough to get 3 semester hours. I have been vindicated. If you want, you can find me on editred.com
I posted what I wrote for the class on there. Be entertained…or else.

I need to write more creatively. Probably finish some projects or at least get the voices out of my head and on paper.  The voices do tell interesting stories though and sharing is caring.
Anyway, we have about 5 months to go before I get to come home again. My goal this time is to spend more than one year back in the United States. When I get home, I will have almost two years at Fort Lewis and will have lived there for maybe a year, probably less. Math is not my strong suit.
    Until next time.

  • What were they thinking?

If you're not on Facebook, you might of not noticed the launch of the Official Multi-National Corps-Iraq Facebook fan site. Either that or you just don't care. Apathy is a terrible sin, and you will burn forever!

The guys that were here last did an info-mercial called "Life of a Deployed Soldier." Check it out, it's on YouTube and the guy who did it was Specialist Gaylord (really that's his name).

At any rate, the current group of decision makers have decided to revive that concept. Well guess who is one of the stars?

If you said, this guy with two thumbs (that works much better when you can see me) then you would be right!

There will be a young PFC (actually the youngest Soldier on Camp Victory) and me. I guess that makes me old. Luckily I'm told the camera makes me look younger. (EDIT: No one actually told me that. I made it up.)

I have my suspicions that they want me for this for my gigantic height and her dimunitive stature. (Could she be a leprachaun? I'm not telling.)

Obviously, they did not look at my Facebook page. Thank goodness they didn't see my Myspace page. They would never of given me this gig. My number two on Myspace is my dog. I will throw out the caveat that Raven is the greatest dog eva, but shhhhhh don't tell the other two. They'd be jealous. (There's three if you didn't know and two cats.)

I would like to say I have an unlimited budget, but there will be no trips to New Zealand to film or empty oil tankers as props. How will my director dreams ever be realized at this rate?

Instead, we will film in the exotic location of Camp Victory, Iraq. We may even take it on the road. Skies the limit, I say. We may even do one in the sky since I can fly in a helicopter as much as I want as long as no one else more important needs the flight.

I love you Space-A. (Google it if you don't know what it is.)

Really what was the point of this blog? Oh yeah, I'm going to be YouTube famous in a couple of weeks. Maybe earlier if we do some promos.

It might involve me taking a dart to the neck. We'll see. Tell all your friends. I'm going to take a dart to the neck for the Army.

    It'll be funny.

  • Wasting away in Iraqi-ville

So, I've been back in Iraq for awhile now. There really isn't much to say about it.

    Guess what?

It's still hot and dusty. Big surprise there. The big difference is how much less violence there is. Some of the things we do now compared to my first time boggle my mind. I guess progress has been made.

In my little cubicle, I can't really say much about it. My job is operations NCO. This seems to mean keep things running smoothly, be it computers or vehicles.

There isn't much job satisfaction in this. I will be picking up mail and working late so my troop could go do a cool story. The 1st Corps Band is playing for the British Queen's birthday today.

Did you know she has a state birthday and her real birthday? That is pretty neat in my book. I need a state birthday with parades and stuff. It would be fun. I wonder if she gets gifts for her second birthday.

Can you imagine if she got a gift from every subject? I bet a lot of it would be cheap useless stuff.

At any rate, time is marching along. I will go on leave soon, which sucks because I've only been here a couple (few) months, but what can you do?

I think I will be taking a day off soon, so that will be nice. That will be my first non-leave/pass day off during a deployment. Insanity!

At any rate, I'll just keep plugging away until this tour is over, too.

  • Purgatory

I always look a the time that I spend in Kuwait as something akin to purgatory. I've been waiting for a flight into Iraq for a week now. It has been pretty boring and a little frustrating. That is time I could have spent at home.

    Such is life though.

I posed the quesiton to my boss to find out what I would be doing in Iraq. It seems to me that I'll be the guy to make things run smoothly, do my bosses job when he's not there and work on training Iraqis. I'm sure the training part will be the how to not the doing. I will also work with the COMSTRAT fusion team. I do not know what that means though so that might be interesting.

What I worry that all translates to is errand boy and admin bitch. We'll see though.

The one plus to all this is that a week of my deployment has already gone by. I'm tax free and getting the special pays. No replacement for my wife, but it is nice to have.

This one won't be going on Facebook, because my boss is on there but it will be forever in Xanga's warm embrace.

Cat don't spam me with 500 comments again. You're Xanga hates mine.

Oh Kuwait is hot and I'm sure Iraq will be hot also.

I hate the desert but love dessert.

  • OIF Round 3

Well I think most of you who read this know that I was destined for my third rotation to Iraq. Terrible as that is; there is something much worse. It is the jet lag I feel right now that I'm in Kuwait.

If you have never deployed Kuwait is the staging area prior to entering Iraq. It's kind of like being in purgatory except you still have to eat and sleep. Those two are really important.

I'm not really sure where I am going with this. I blame jet lag and not enough sleep.

I flew out on Monday to Ontario, CA, which to suffice to say is not in Canada. Go figure. I thought I was going to Canada, but I was wrong. I guess that explains how my friend knew about their USO.

Anyway, then we sat in a hot hangar waiting to get on a flight. We get lined up and the plane breaks for a while. We tried again and again. Third time was the charm.

After a layover in Montana (thank you USO volunteers for the McDonalds) and then Shannon Ireland, we made it to Kuwait. Yay!

I do want to specifically thank the Minniapolis, MN, USO volunteers because they went above and beyond to make the us feel a little bit better about leaving home and filling our bellies with goodies.

At any rate, thats the synopsis of the fligth. You'll have to e-mail me or IM me about the details of figuring out where we were suppose to go. I will say that prior planning prevents piss poor performance.

I'll let you wonder if there was prior planning.
